Numb, burning feet: when neuropathy may involve a pinched nerve

Neuropathy means the nerves in your feet are not working normally. Diabetes is a common cause, but not the only one.

In some people, part of the problem is a nerve that is squeezed as it passes through a tight space in the leg or foot, similar to carpal tunnel syndrome in the wrist. Clues can include symptoms that are worse in one foot, a specific tender spot along the nerve, or tingling when that spot is tapped.

Treatment starts with managing the underlying cause, such as blood sugar, along with medication, bracing, or physical therapy. For selected patients with a compressed nerve, surgery to release the pressure may be an option.

If your feet are numb, burning, or you have lost balance, ask for a nerve evaluation. And if you have numbness, check your feet daily for cuts or sores you may not feel.
